EVENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL AL QUDS AUTUMN ACADEMY 2013

The Al Quds University Autumn Academy 2013 presented lectures, master classes, workshops and four concerts in the time from 2nd to 13th October.

The Autumn Academy started with “The Atelier” – a musical encounter for composers and musicians which took place at Hind Al Husseini College Theatre Hall led by the Czech composer Slavomir Horinka from Prague. The musical results of “The Atelier” were presented on October 10th by Mary Freiburghaus, Jiries Boullata, Mohamad Abo Zainah, Omar Youssef and Slavomir Horinka in form of a musical interpretation of Kadinsky’s composition Nr. 8.

The first concert of the Al Quds University Autumn Academy was presented at the Ras Khamis Community Center in Shouffat where a very young audience enjoyed the concert program of Arabic folk songs and a workshop to discover different sounds of music.

A highlight of the Al Quds Autumn Academy was the world premiere of the winning submission of this year’s Al Quds Composition Award which was celebrated in front of an enthusiastic audience in at Hind Al Husseini Theatre Hall and the Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah.

Besides the musical interpretation of the winning submission the program included performances by our young and gifted singers Hiba Awad, Tita Tawil and Sama Shafea as well as our promising string duo Hanin Rjoub and Sarah Said.

They were joined by an international ensemble of artists such as Sylvia Khittl-Muhr from Austria, Karl Kronthaler from Germany, Mary Freiburghaus from Switzerland, Lisa Mostin from Belgium and Ferran Sola Albrich from Spain.

Composers from Jordan, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A., United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Russia, South Korea, Canada and the Netherlands had participated in the Al Quds Composition Award. This year’s winner Yazan Loujami is a 19 years old Syrian Composer with Palestinian roots, born in Damascus. The international committee of music experts was highly impressed by the powerful musical imagination, the unique individual style and the virtuosity of the young composer.

The big final of the Autumn Academy 2013 was a concert at the St. Anne’s Basilica in the old City of Jerusalem with the new Al Quds College of Music Chorus conducted by Karl Kronthaler as well as Conrad Muck (violin), Sylvia Khittl-Muhr (soprano), Stefan Heckel (accordion), Mira Azar (voice), Wael Abou Saloum (oud) and Raed Said (musical direction and percussion). The listeners of the filled basilica applauded to Suffi songs and improvisations as well as pieces by Schubert, Bach, Verdi, Rossini and Raed Said.
