Invited by the Palestinian Chemical Society Nobel Prize Winner Prof. Martin Karplus Visits Al-Quds University of East Jerusalem

Abu Dis, Jerusalem: On Sunday, Prof. Marin Karplus, 2013 Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry, was hosted

by Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem. Prof. Karplus accepted the invitation by the Palestinian

Chemical Society for him to visit Al-Quds and address its faculty.

During his visit, Karplus delivered a lecture titled “Motion: A Hallmark of Life. From Marsupials to

Molecules”, which was attended by members of the Palestinian Chemical Society, faculty members of

Al-Quds University Chemistry department, and a group of other interested faculty members. During his

visit, he met with Prof. Sari Nusseibeh, President of Al-Quds University, Dr Imad AbuKishk, Executive

Vice President, Prof. Hasan Dweik, Vice President of Science and Society as well as the Head of the

Palestinian Chemical Society, Dr. Khalid Kanan.

Martin Karplus, who received the 2013 Nobel Prize for his ground breaking work in developing computer

modules for understanding the structure and dynamics of molecules, empowering advances in

chemistry, physics and medical research, visited the different centers and research labs at Al-Quds

University, including the AbuJihad Center for Palestinian Political Prisoners Movement, Nanotechnology

Research Lab as well as the Virology Medical Research Center. Prof. Karplus, also visited the old city of

Jerusalem, on a tour organized by Al-Quds University’s Center for Jerusalem Studies which included the

various Al-Quds University centers working in the old city of Jerusalem.

During his meeting with the Palestinian academics/chemists Martin expressed his support for the

Palestinian people” hoping that his visit to Al-Quds will help in making the world aware of the

importance of Palestinian Territories, and help in furthering the peace process”,and called for "One Land with Two States within that Land" based on the work of Herbert Kelman.
