Racism? NO thanks!!!

“When we lose the right to be different, we lose the privilege to be free.” –Charles Evans Hughes, Former Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court.

This is the quote that happened to come to my hand when I pulled one of the hundreds of quotes from the special box.

Yesterday IUC was visited by Bulgarian Red Cross volunteers with the purpose to remind students of racial discrimination’s negative consequences. A group of young volunteers encouraged us to remember our obligation and determination to combat racial discrimination. They asked us to pull one quote from the box and think about it. Also, they gave markers and pieces of paper so that we wrote on them “Differences unite us!” and take a picture with the message.

After, young volunteers thanked us and left the college to give flyers to the people in the city center.

Have you ever witnessed any type of racial discrimination?

On 21st of March in 1960, 69 people were killed by police in South Africa, for their fight against Apartheid (racial segregation) laws. For this reason in1965 the United Nations General Assembly adopted convention called “The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination”. Hence each year, the 21st of March is the time for us to commemorate those lives that have been lost combating for Equal Human Rights during the Apartheid regime. They have our deepest sympathy and may their Souls Rest in Peace! heart
