Memorable Global Hanma 2012

By Apichaya Piyapinyo

(Thammasat University, Thailand)

While I was interning in Bangkok, I received an email from Kyungnam University. I was exuberant to learn that I was the only Thammasat student who was chosen to join the Global Hanma Program to learn Korean language and culture in Masan, South Korea for three weeks. On August 3, 2012 I flew five hours from Bangkok to Gimhae international airport, solo.

To gain cultural experiences, we tried on colorful Hanbok and learned how to pay respect in Korean official ceremonies. We also learn of the tea making ceremony that should be conducted with peaceful mind. Furthermore, we went to Jimjilban that shocked me as a visitor from Thailand. I never thought that grown-ups could walk around in birthday suits having strangers around. However, in order to blend in with Korean people, we decided to adopt the concept, ‘when in Korea, do as the Koreans do.’ Other activities we did on campus were fan painting, kite making, Samulnori, and Taekwondo. These activities not only were entertaining but also allowed us to comprehensively experience Korean culture.

While we joined the Global Hanma 2012, the song ‘Gangnam Style’ by the artist PSY was a big hit. The song was well known for its horse-riding dance. Even though we did not visit Gangnam area when we were in Seoul for 2 days, but we had no regret because we had better experiences living a ‘Kyungnam Style’.

Three weeks in Korea had passed so fast because there were so many activities for us to participate. The longer we stayed, the more we bonded with friends from different countries like Hong Kong, Philippines, Russia, Japan, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, and USA. I wanted to stay longer if my school in Thailand had not opened for 2 weeks already.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kyungnam University for organizing the Global Hanma program. Thank you every volunteer and staff that made Global Hanma Program 2012 so memorable. The experiences derived from joining the program are priceless.
