New Campus, New Life

Nova SBE is about to start the construction of a new magnified campus in Municipality of Cascais (near to the beach) which is supposed to be finished by 2020. According to our Dean, José Ferreira Machado, “this new campus will allow us to further improve our high quality teaching, which has been recognized internationally, both in rankings and in the number and caliber of the international students, and to add another attractive factor: a unique geographic location by the sea, distinctive on a European scale. We believe that this combination of factors will further distinguish our school among the best in Europe”*

The new campus will offer a modern and attractive place for students and faculty while simultaneously maximizing the extraordinary potential of the ten acres terrain located by the fort of São Julião da Barra in Carcavelos, which was made available by the Municipality of Cascais.

During June and July five architectural firms have participated in the architectural competition for the new campus – Frederico Valsassina Architects, Nuno Leónidas Architects, Vítor Carvalho Araújo Architects, OpenBook and Trias de Bes Architecture. The five projects were appreciated and commented by professors, students, staff, alumni, corporate partners, public institutions and other visitors.

According the Professor Pedro Santa Clara, responsible for the Nova 2020 project, “This lifestyle, I would say Californian, is for us extraordinary to compete in Europe. I am very sensitive to this. I was a professor at the University of California in Los Angeles for over 10 years. And UCLA in the United States, competes with Harvard to attract students or teachers, using the Californian lifestyle, as well as Columbia competes by being in New York and many young people want to move to the "city that never sleeps". The same thing will happen in Europe. There will be schools in London, Paris or Berlin going to play the card of being located in large cities, with a huge cultural life.

Our competitive advantage is the proximity of the sea, the outdoors, sports, healthy live style, among other arguments. And, once again, to be able to compete with the best, we need a new campus.”**

The jury of the architectural competition for the new campus of Nova SBE, with representatives of Nova Executive Education, the Rectorate of Nova University, Nova SBE, the Municipality of Cascais and the School of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, unanimously chose the proposal presented by Vitor Carvalho Araújo Architects. The project is estimated in €35 millions and you can see it in the following movie
