Five minutes with the top MBA student for 2013

"Do not network, make friends." This is the advice Hennie Mansvelt, top MBA student for 2013 at the University Stellenbosch (USB), gave all prospective MBA students.

Hennie did the modular MBA programme that consists of 11 blocks spread over three years. His research focused on ‘Green IT initiatives that reduce the footprint of the traditional IT function and where opportunities exist to increase its level of adoption.’

Upon reflection Hennie said he wish he spent more time socialising with fellow classmates during the weeks they had class. But his hard work definitely paid off with the prestigious award as top MBA student for 2013.

Hennie answered a few questions about his MBA experience.

Why did you decide to do your MBA at USB?

Once a Matie, always a Matie ! :-) In addition, the format suited me, the format offered by other schools either did not suit me in terms of time away from the office or had limited interaction with fellow students.

How many hours a week, on average, did you spend working on your MBA?

Jeepers, that is hard to say... I normally took a week or two off post the block to recover :-) After that I would probably work 10 to 12 hours per week. Weekends were difficult as I reserved that to spend time with family and friends. So I basically worked 2 to 3 hours per evening during the week.

What is the one thing you wish someone told you before embarking on your MBA journey?

I was hoping the workload would get less as the years passed, instead the third year was the toughest of the lot!

Has the fact that you have an MBA made any difference in your career so far?

Yes, I was promoted 18 months into the process and winning the top student for 2013 (should, I hope) differentiate me from the chasing pack going forward...

If you can do your MBA all over again, what would you do differently?

Hmmm, socialize more with my new mates during block, have the 3rd beer :-)

What advise would you give new MBA students that just started their studies?

Know what you want out of the MBA, know what you want to achieve and plan for it. Otherwise it is probably not going to happen...

Do not 'network', make friends...
